Sunflower sessions are one of my favorite ways to transition into fall. For September and October sessions, I recommend leaning into warm, rich colors and texture rather than trying to match the yellow flowers. Whether you're coming from Baltimore, Howard County, Montgomery County, or Washington, DC, the goal is the same: choose clothing that feels elevated but still like your family.

What to Wear for Sunflower Photos FALL 2026 | Baltimore Maryland Family Photographer: Start With Mom

I almost always recommend choosing Mom's outfit first and building everyone else around her. It creates a much more cohesive look without making the family feel overly coordinated.

Here are six styles that photograph beautifully in the sunflower fields:

1. Romantic

Think flowing silhouettes, soft movement, delicate details and warm fall colors like wine, dusty rose, plum and chocolate.

2. Modern Classic

Tailored pieces, beautiful knits and timeless silhouettes in burgundy, navy, camel, cream and deep rust. Polished without feeling formal.

3. Effortless

Relaxed trousers, textured sweaters, simple dresses and comfortable layers. Try rust, denim, chocolate, oatmeal and muted gold.

4. Editorial

This is where you can have a little more fun. Wide-leg trousers, structured jackets, statement dresses and interesting silhouettes in deep jewel tones, burgundy, aubergine and rich brown.

5. Bohemian

Flowing fabrics, embroidery, natural textures and layered pieces work beautifully against the sunflowers. Think terracotta, deep teal, burnt orange and warm berry tones.

6. Minimalist

Keep the silhouettes clean and the palette restrained: black, cream, navy, charcoal and taupe. The simplicity lets the sunflower field provide the color.

One Rule: Coordinate, Don't Match

Instead of putting everyone in the same colors, choose 3–4 complementary shades and repeat them subtly throughout the family's outfits.

And don't forget texture—knits, linen, denim, suede and layered fabrics add dimension without competing with the flowers.
