As parents, we all know how quickly the first year of a baby’s life flies by. One day, you’re bringing them home from the hospital, and before you know it, they’re taking their first steps. Capturing these precious moments through professional photography ensures that you’ll always have tangible memories to look back on. As a maternity and newborn photographer based in Baltimore, MD, I’ve had the honor of documenting countless families’ journeys. While every baby is unique, here are the five most important milestones you won’t want to miss in your little one’s first year.
1. Newborn Session (0-2 Weeks)
There’s nothing quite like the first few days of your baby’s life. Their tiny fingers, delicate eyelashes, and sleepy snuggles are fleeting, making a newborn photoshoot one of the most cherished sessions you’ll ever have. The best time to schedule this session is within the first two weeks after birth when babies are still super sleepy and easy to pose. Whether it’s capturing their tiny yawns, little curled-up bodies, or the special bond between parents and their newborn, these images will become some of your most treasured keepsakes.
2. Th

e Smiling Stage (2-4 Months)
Around two to four months, babies start to develop their social skills, and that first intentional smile is pure magic. This is the time when they begin recognizing faces, cooing, and engaging with their environment. These photos are filled with joy and personality, as your baby’s unique expressions start to shine through. Plus, they’re often more awake and alert during sessions, making it easier to capture those bright, curious eyes.
3. The Sitter Session (6-8 Months)
The six- to eight-month window is one of my absolute favorites to photograph! By this stage, babies are usually sitting up unassisted, full of giggles, and fascinated by everything around them. Their chubby cheeks, playful nature, and big belly laughs make for some of the cutest, most engaging photos. Unlike newborns, babies at this age have a variety of expressions and are more interactive with parents and siblings. If you’re looking for a milestone session that’s guaranteed to result in heart-melting images, this is the one.

4. First Birthday & Cake Smash (12 Months)
The big one-year celebration is a huge milestone—not just for your baby, but for you as parents, too! Whether you opt for a traditional first birthday portrait or a fun-filled cake smash session, this is a wonderful way to commemorate your baby’s transition into toddlerhood. These sessions are all about capturing your little one’s personality—whether they’re shy, adventurous, or full of mischief. Cake smash sessions, in particular, bring out hilarious reactions, from gleeful frosting-covered faces to curious pokes at the cake.
5.
First Steps & Beyond (12-18 Months)
Once babies start standing and taking their first steps, their world (and yours!) changes completely. Between 12 and 18 months, toddlers are exploring their independence, making this an exciting milestone to document. Whether it’s their wobbly first steps, the way they reach out for your hand, or their delight in newfound mobility, these moments tell the story of growth and discovery. Outdoor sessions during this stage are especially fun, as little ones love exploring parks, gardens, or their own backyard!

Each milestone represents a chapter in your baby’s journey, and professional photography ensures these precious moments are beautifully preserved. As a photographer, my goal is to create images that not only capture how your baby looks at each stage but also the emotions and connections that make these moments so special.
If you’re in the Baltimore area and looking for someone to document your baby’s first year, I’d love to be a part of your family’s journey. Whether it’s a newborn session, sitter session, or first birthday celebration, let’s create timeless memories together.
